sculpture
Designed as a sculptural marriage between the precedents of Thomas Heatherwick and Lewis.Tsurumaki, Lewis Architects, this piece is an experiment in connections and materials. Constructed with black walnut and white pine, the wood ribbon finds inspiration from the folded planes in many of LTLs interior works. The structural steel tubing is of a similar language to that of the illuminated tubes in Heatherwicks Sitooterie project in Essex, UK. The connections between varying materials become the strength and focus of the project, thus the subtleties of the notable precedents are even more realized.

design+build
The two-week design+build experience with Brian MacKay-Lyons was focused on the investigation of the proto-urban condition found at the point where a rural house becomes a city house. Revisiting this idea, the group began the construction of a min/max house along an historic ridge high atop MacKay-Lyons coastal property. This house stretched the length of the ridge with a 1000 courtyard captured between two structures - one designed for living and one for sleeping. The structures were constructed with minimal means and have minimal impact on the land, but by anchoring both ends of the site this modest building gains strength by engaging the larger environment.

screenprinting workshop with Harmen Liemburg
Collaboration with Dutch screenprinter Harmen Liemburg while he served as an artist in residence at UNC-Charlotte. The weekend workshop producing these and other screenprints was also a collaboration between art+architecture students within the college. The focus of the workshop was document Charlotte's ever-evolving historic fabric.
Charlotte's history is typified by a rich but largely narrative or mythic history, and marked by the loss of its physical history resulting from its rush to modernization and its re-invention as astronghold in the New South. All prints aimed at capturing the somewhat debated and mythic traditions of Charlotte, while also graphically expressing the current identity of one of the nation's fastest growing cities.
